Sock knitting on the edge of Scotland

Welcome to my weekly ramblings on my knitting and crochet projects. This week you find me on the Isle of Mull. We've had a fab week exploring northern mull with some good weather. Today is a bit misty. I've made great progress with Mr W's socks made from wool from Ewe and Ply. It's blue face Leicester and rather good to knit with. I'll be doing some knitting in the croft we are staying in with our friends Cathy and Dave. I'll be back in Chester next week.

What day of the week is it?

Welcome to my weekly ramblings on my knitting and crochet projects.

Well what a nana I am. I was so busy down the allotment I forgot to do my Wednesday wip.

So one day late here is what I'm up to. I finished the socks for Mr W. I used pure blue faced Leicester sock yarn from Ewe and Ply based in Oswestry, Shropshire. It was lovely to knit with and will keep Mr W's toes warm on our forthcoming camping trip. The contrasting colour is West Yorkshire Spinners blue faced Leicester sock yarn with nylon.

We're off visiting friends and relatives next week so I will be taking a new knitting project to work on. I'm using Sirdar linen mix to knit one of the lovely cotton tops from the latest Rowan magazine. It should be a nice easy knit. I'll also be working on my spiral granny blanket. I've nearly finished all the squares but there is a lot of sewing up to do and weaving in ends.

And you never know I might take a sock to work on as well

I couldn't help it, I just had to buy some sock yarn

Welcome to my weekly ramblings on my knitting and crochet projects.

Today is a day for knitting in the garden. I have a lovely bank holiday weekend including a visit to a craft fair at Llynfyllin Workshouse in mid wales. There were several woolly based stalls. It was lovely to feel the yarn and chat about knitting and crochet. And yes dear viewer, I bought sock wool from Ewe and Ply based in Oswestry who focus on British yarns and non acrylic. The sock yarn is 100% British blue faced Leicester and I will be making some socks for Mr W

Today is Global Running day but I think it is a bit hot so I will be finding some shade in the garden to do some knitting.

What do you take to the beach?

Welcome to my weekly ramblings on my knitting and crochet projects.

Last friday I finished my sports sweater from No 1 Rowan Magazine. I love it, the yarn is fab and it has some fab design details. I used Moorland yarn a mix of bluefaced Leicester and alpaca, all British yarn from Rowan.

I am making progress on my afterthought heal socks. It was great to sit on the beach at New Quay last week and do a bit of knitting. I will finish the other sock and then insert the heel on both socks.

As I have finished a big project I'm looking to what to do next. I have just unraveled a cardigan I knitted for Mr W but he has lost so much weight it is now too big for him. I have enough yarn to knit him another and may be something else. It's Rowan DK cotton so it was quite easy to unravel. I have some kid silk haze in my stash that might make a good project, I have a fab brioche knitting pattern for a shawl that I might use this for. Decisions, decisions!

Have a great bank holiday weekend everyone.

Choosing my holiday project

Welcome to my weekly ramblings on my knitting and crochet projects.

As I'm on holiday this week I am working on my afterthought heel sock. Socks are great for travelling as they are small and portable and if you use a magic ring you have less chance of loosing a needle. I have marked where I want the heel with some contrasting yarn and now progressing along the foot to the toe.

I'm also making great progress on my Sports Sweater. To knit the sleeves I have picked up stitches from the sleeve edge of the front and back pieces. This saves on sewing up later. The join of the front and back is done by casting off both pieces together. You knit together one stitch from the front and one from the back and then cast off as normal. It gives a really neat join.

This week is mental health awareness week. I don't have to tell you how beneficial knitting and crochet are for reducing stress and blood pressure. So I hope you are all calm and collected and making something fab.

All my autumn courses are now on my website so have a look and see what grabs your fancy. http://www.woollyhattie.co.uk/workshops

Re-knitting the past

Welcome to my weekly ramblings on my knitting and crochet projects.

Today I'm wearing a lovely jumper I bought in Kerry many years ago. We were on a camping trip in May and although the days were warm the evenings were cold. I hadn't packed enough warm stuff so had to make an emergency purchase. It's pure wool with a lovely cable pattern on the front and is just right for a cold wet day like today.

This week I've made great progress on my sports sweater from Rowan's No 1 magazine. I've finished the front and back. I use coloured yarn to mark my progress so that I can match my two sides accurately. I find this is better than using a tape measure. The shoulder seams are cast off together to form an interesting detail on the shoulder seams. The yarn I'm using is fab, Rowan Moorland yarn, a mix of blue faced Leicester and alpaca, and all British yarn

I got my sewing machine out this week to make a throw for my old IKEA sofa. I used material I bought 13 years ago to make some curtains. I've been meaning to do this for ages but the wet day yesterday was ideal for completing this project.

I have a bundle of repairs to do this week. Not as exciting as a new project but essential to make some of my fave jumpers last a bit a longer.

Going around in spirals

Welcome to my weekly ramblings on my knitting and crochet projects.

This week I'm getting very excited about my spiral granny square blanket. I'm using up loads of my stash and I think the affect is fab. Going around in spirals requires a lot of yarn control and of course weaving in ends.

Look out for details about my courses later in the week on woolly hat Facebook and Instagram pages.

Buying new yarn for a new project

Welcome to my weekly ramblings on my knitting and crochet projects.

This week I finished my trillium top, I have some ends to sew and then it is complete. It has been lovely to knit, I loved the Summerlite 4ply cotton from Rowan.

So one project finished time to start a new one. I treated myself to two visits to yarn shops this week. At Yarn O'clock in Mold I bought some Rowan moorland dk yarn. It's a mix of british blue faced Leicester yarn and alpaca yarn. So soft and lovely to knit with. I'm making a jumper from Rowan No 1 magazine. I knitted one in the 1980s but I wore it out. I loved is so much I'm going to knit another.

I've also started a new sock with an after thought heel using up some of my west yorkshire knitters sock yarn stash. It uses elongated stitches to create a cable affect.

I stocked up on orange yarn so I can complete my spiral granny throw, watch this space.

See you next week

Looking forward to squishing some yarn

Welcome to my weekly ramblings about my knitting and crochet projects.

This week the local yarn shops open in England and Wales. I will be visiting one sometime this week and I'm so excited.

I'm wearing my Harriet Jacket published in Inside Crochet last year, it's crocheted using a spike stitch using West Yorkshire Spinners Croft Aran Shetland yarn. It's great for this time of year as it's easy to wear and nice and warm for these cold nights we're getting.

I finished my toe up socks and even though they don't match I'll enjoy wearing them.

Now is the time for spring cleaning. I'm washing my big sofa throws in the bath and then doing some repairs. With lots of wear some of the central rings of the granny squares have come undone. A good reminder to make sure that when you do grannies, make sure you spend proper amount of time weaving in the ends.
